What is the registration of importers and exporters

  • The company or business wishing to conduct export and import business should first register with the Bureau of Foreign Trade of the Ministry of Economic Affairs as an importer or exporter.
  • Before applying for registration as an importer or exporter, the company or business should apply to the Bureau of Foreign Trade of the Ministry of Economic Affairs for a reservation of the English name of the company or business name
  • Once the reservation of the English name is approved, the retention period is six months.

Instructions on the reservation of the importer or exporter’s English name

  • The English name registration shall state the name of the principal and the type of organization; the English name of the foreign branch shall indicate its nationality and the name of the branch.
  • The English name of the importer or exporter shall not be the same as the English name of an importer or exporter whose registration has been canceled, revoked or annulled by the Bureau of Foreign Trade, Ministry of Economic Affairs for less than 2 years. However, if there is a valid reason for approval by the Bureau of Foreign Trade or if the English name of the foreign branch office is the same as that of the foreign company, and the nationality and branch name are indicated, this restriction does not apply.
  • Whether the English names of the importer and exporter are the same, the main name should be examined; if the main name is not the same, the English name is not the same.
  • If the English name is marked with different types of business or distinguishable words, the English name is deemed to be different, even if the main name is the same.

The preceding distinguishable words do not include general, non-professional nouns, titles, abbreviations, spaces, symbols, singular and plural nouns, parts of speech, capitalization, place names, and types of organizations.

The preceding general, non-professional nouns refer to ENTERPRISE, INDUSTRY, EXPORT, IMPORT, TRADE, BUSINESS, COMMERCE, INTERNATIONAL, MANUFACTURING, or GROUP.

  • The English name used to apply for registration and its specified industry shall not exceed the scope of its business scopes.
  • The English name must not be confused and misidentified with government agencies or public welfare organizations.
  • Please note that the use of the English name is subject to the Trademark Act.
